I’ve been wondering how I would write this blog ever since I played a part in Cameron and Mikayla’s surprise proposal last week. When you’ve been apart of such a beautiful, raw, authentic and magical moment as their proposal, it’s hard to fully have the words to explain the plans that were made, words that were exchanged and joys that were had. If I were to try and explain their night, my words would fail. They would never reach the full capacity to be able to explain the real love that Mikayla and Cameron so obviously share together. Don’t worry – I’ll explain my side of it, but the future Mr. and Mrs. Ahlvers are going to share their side and their story to hopefully give you just a little bit of a peek into the real, raw and authentic love that they share.
A few weeks back, Cameron reached out to me saying that he wanted to propose to Mikayla during a photography session with me so that they would have pictures of the joyous night to look back on. Of course, I was immediately excited. To be able to experience and witness something as sweet as a surprise proposal is hands down a photographer’s dream. Cameron said that Mikayla loves Colorado, and that he wanted the setting and theme of it to feel as close to Colorado as it could! Naturally, we picked the only setting in the St. Louis area that has a mountain vibe – the Pine Trail in August A. Busch Wildlife Conservation Park! It was perfect. In order to successfully plan a session with the two of them without Mikayla realizing the TRUE plans, I sent an email to the both of them (Cameron happily played the part of acting as if we hadn’t already talked about a session for them both and as if we hadn’t already set a date/location!) ! I asked if they would be models in a styled shoot for me, with a ‘romantic picnic in the woods’ theme. I even reached out to a fellow wedding-planner vendor friend, Allyssa Underwood of Allyssa Elaine Events and asked if she would be able to be involved to help plan the most perfect, beautiful and romantic picnic set-up on the Pine Trail. Allyssa then also reached out to Sigalit of The Flower Bar STL for a bouquet for Mikayla! Having the excuse of their session being a styled shoot worked perfectly to allow Allyssa and Sigalit to be involved and apart of it without Mikayla suspecting a thing.
Cameron loves making videos – he had thought about making a clever video for her and implementing it into the proposal before he had asked me to take pictures of it! Since they’re both passionate about photography (she’s currently taking a film class!) and videography, he asked if they could bring their cameras along as ‘props’ so he could set his camera down right before he was going to propose so that he could hit record without her realizing it. (In the images below, you’ll see a couple of pictures of the two of them with their cameras and then the two of them dancing! Right before they started dancing, Cameron gave his camera to Allyssa asking her to ‘hold it’, when he really had begun recording. He dropped down to one knee just a few minutes after they started dancing together, as you’ll see below!!!) Friends, it was SO magical. But, before you see the beautiful moments that they shared during their proposal, I want you to hear their story, adventures, thoughts on their proposal, wedding plans and what they love most about one another.
The two of them met through a mutual friend, and began dating last June. They had the opportunity to go to Honduras together for a missions-trip, and they said that it was easily one of their best adventures they’ve shared prior to becoming engaged. They said that it was “incredible to experience something so life-changing with each other. Our faith is super important to us, so we loved being able to answer God’s call together. Ministry is a huge part of our lives.” Mikayla’s favorite part of Cameron’s proposal? She said that she couldn’t pick one thing – everything was the best part for her. She told me that Cameron isn’t much of a planner, so it warmed her heart that he put so much thought into his proposal to her. She love everything from the fall colors to the intimate setting and the Colorado vibes (She even said that in case you haven’t figured it out, she has a pretty amazing fiancé. How sweet!!) As for the wedding plans, Mikayla said that she absolutely can’t wait to go wedding dress shopping, especially because she has always been a huge fan of the TLC show “Say Yes to the Dress”! Cameron of course is looking forward to the food and desert taste testing (vanilla cake, yes please!). They both would love to get married in the middle of God’s beautiful creation -somewhere outside and gorgeous.
Guys, listen to this – I asked what they most love and appreciate about each other. Here’s what Mikayla said: “I love sooooo many things about Cameron, but my favorite thing has to be his love for Christ. I’m so glad God put him in my life when I needed him the most. I can’t freakin’ wait to spend the rest of our lives growing our relationships with Jesus.” Cameron said that he “loves how authentic Mikayla is. She’s so passionate and real in everything she does. In relationships, in work, in faith, literally everything!”
These two are the real deal, guys. I am SO honored and thrilled to have been apart of their special engagement and cannot wait for them to become one when they marry each other next year.
