This past Sunday evening, I hung out with these two at Creve Coeur Airport to do an Airplane/Pilot Lifestyle Session! Kim and Kevin have become really close friends of my hubby and I’s this past year – we all moved to the St. Louis area around the same time last fall and have really developed an awesome friendship together. We do SO much with them! We love going downtown and trying new restaurants, playing sand volleyball at Creve Coeur Park, hammocking and watching the Bachelor (well, really just Kim and I like to watch it and the boys sit and talk during it!).
Both Kevin’s Dad and his brother are pilots – flying airplanes seems to run in their blood, since Kevin decide that he too wanted to be a pilot! Kim told me that Kevin caught the flying bug from them, and decided that he wanted to pursue flying during their first year of marriage. He spent 6 months training, studying, practicing and being quizzed by Kim during his little bits of off time. It’s so apparent that Kim is super proud of him – his love for flying has since become a mutual love for the both of them and huge part of their life together! But – let’s backup and get the full scoop on these two.
They met in Winona, Minnesota when Kevin went with his best friend to CRU (a college campus ministry)! His friend just happened to go to Kim’s college – right before they went to pick her up, Kevin’s friend turned to him and said “I think you’re going to like this girl.” Well – turns out he did! They dated long distance for two and a half years until Kev planned out the most romantic of proposals and asked her to be his wife.
Their proposal had been planned out long before Kevin dropped to one knee. He had created a video explaining to Kim that she was about to go on a scavenger hunt full of gifts and clues that would lead to the next one! The final clue lead her to his house in Wisconsin – when she arrived, she was met with a candle-lit path that lead her straight to Kevin. Kim grew up ice skating and has a huge passion for it – it turned out that Kevin had been working on creating an ice rink at his house, with the words “Will You Marry Me?” written in lights frozen beneath the surface of the ice skating rink! Once she got to the end of the candle-lit path, he turned on the switch for the “Will You Marry Me?” lights, dropped to one knee and popped the big question! Once Kim said yes, he turned on all of the lights over the skating rink to reveal his big project to her – an ice rink of her very own. Kim told me that she had always dreamed of having her own private skating rink like in the movies (Ice Princess, anyone?!). They two of them skated around the rink for a bit before going inside to their suprise engagement party with all of their family! Yeah, I know – their proposal is like one out of a movie (I’ve seen the scavenger hunt video and pictures of the rink. It really WAS a incredible!)
They got married a few months later in Gulf Shores, Alabama! Kim told me that it was THE hottest day ever, with not even a cloud in the sky. Despite the heat, their day was filled with friends and family, a beautiful ocean view, a dreamy rustic/chic beach house and the prettiest of sunflowers. The first year or so of their marriage was filled with tests and practicing for Kevin to become a pilot! They would love to one day have a family and even adopt a child. Moving to the mountains is near the top of their list because they love to camp, hike and snowboard!
Want to know their favorite part of marriage? It’s honoring God through doing life together. They said it’s so important to them to put God first and chase the Lord’s heart, while continually seeking Him. Here’s their advice to you: “Put yourself second. Its all about the other person. It wasn’t until we got married that we realized how selfish we are. It is so important to put the others needs before your own.” Guys, these two are one of a kind and such dear friends to Matt and I. We love them tons and are forever grateful and changed by their friendship.
I’ve come to realize that these two always stop what they’re doing when an airplane flies by, so that they can watch it and decide what kind of plane it is!
Kevin’s picture idea…haha!
