This past January, Matt and I traveled to Portland, Oregon to visit family (our new baby niece had just been born a few weeks prior!). While there, we knew (okay, I knew) that we needed to do an anniversary session at Latourell Falls in Portland to celebrate Matt and I’s 5 years of marriage. An awesome perk that has come with being a photographer, is that I’ve learned to highly prioritize getting pictures taken with my Hubby in all of the cool locations that we explore together.
Another perk that has come with being a photographer, is that I’ve been able to meet and network with rad photographers all across the country and world. Before Matt and I headed to the PNW, I connected with a photographer local to Portland to set up our session. Kayla Dolce was the BEST and absolutely killed our anniversary session at Latourell Falls – we’ve even become close friends since then, and plan to meet up in Yosemite this summer with our guys!
When Matt and I had these pictures taken back in January, we were coming out of a super tough season. We had moved to a new state after selling what we thought would be our forever home, Matt had recently changed careers to be a Realtor®, I had relocated my business to Arizona after spending two months away from Matt, we were desperate for our own house again, struggling in our marriage, searching for a church home and working our butts off to get our small businesses up and running. It was an insane season. We were fighting to mend and strengthen so many different areas of our life, but we were dang tired.
Friends, THAT’S why I prioritize having pictures taken of Matt and I over the past five years of our marriage. I love that we have been able to look at each of those pictures from our sessions and remember what we were doing in that season, the things we had been through together and the adventures we had in that specific location. I’ve seen us grow in so many ways from the first time we had our pictures taken together in 2013 for our engagement session.
We’re not perfect and we don’t try to act a specific way in front of the camera. We’re messy and broken, but are striving to live a life centered on Christ and who HE has called us to be. Who HE wants us to be for one another.
Take pictures with your husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, whoever.
Use the images to look back on the seasons you’ve been through and the ways you’ve grown.
You won’t regret it.
