Mel and Bill’s stunning sunrise elopement at cathedral rock in Sedona was quite genuinely at morning that looked (and felt) like a dream. The sky showed off that morning giving them the most glorious sunrise to soak in together, just mere moments before their intimate wedding ceremony. Their day was full with so many adventures from hiking in the dark, a cliffside ceremony, breakfast at a local coffee shop and then wine tasting at a nearby winery. It was an epic day, to say the least. Here’s their story:
Mel’s friend from college had been dating Bill’s friend from highschool for a long time. They had crossed paths a couple times, but never actually had a conversation until a group of friends got together for an Ohio State football game. Bill said hi and asked Mel if anyone had ever mentioned that she had a wicked RBF. Mel replied honestly with a “yep! all the time!” and the rest is history. They said: “I don’t think we even talked to anyone else the rest of the night and have been pretty inseparable ever since.”
“We both have a weird obsession with mornings, particularly a slow morning that we can both just enjoy coffee and enjoy having the whole day ahead of us. We had our puppy Yoda for about 3 weeks and finally had a Saturday morning to enjoy together (I think Mel was working 3 jobs at the time and life was just crazy). Mel was in the kitchen early in the am making coffee and heard Bill yell “hey! hes got somethin!” as little Yoda comes running down the hallway. Mel ran over to Yoda and wrestled the mystery object out of his mouth, only to realize it was a little black box. She opened the box to find an engagement ring as she looked up and Bill was getting on a knee. It was perfect, private and lowkey, very true to our relationship and style. Then we packed up and headed to a brunch reservation!”
“We actually were back and forth several times about the type of wedding to have. Really, we both wanted a small intimate wedding but we met with alot of push back and guilt. We are both people pleasers especially when it comes to people we love so we found ourselves leaning towards compromise on alot of things. Piece by piece we started to scale back and stay true to ourselves. Ultimately, God and fate were on our side and covid struck along with some family hardships and our elopement ended up being the two of us. All throughout the day we kept mentioning how grateful we were that everything worked out the way it did. We are so happy we eloped and were able to quiet all the distractions and background noise and focus entirely on us and our union.”
“We chose Cathedral Rock because the terrain was breathtaking and intimate. We loved how the cliffs felt intimate and private and symbolized us being sheltered together even while having an insane view in the background symbolizing the huge world we were about to take on together.”
“Our favorite part of our elopement day was how present we both were. there were so many intentional moments that we know we never would have during a traditional wedding. our favorite moment was standing hand in hand watching the sunrise second by second in absolute tranquility. just having that moment to reflect on our relationship and the feeling of our hands in eachothers, knowing we were minutes away from committing our lives to one another was absolutely amazing.”
I have so, so many more things to say about this incredible couple – the ways they were constantly connecting with one another throughout their entire elopement day was truly so amazing to witness and an honor to be a part of. And yes – their day really was as epic but also relaxed as it sounds.
